One of the most important elements of monitoring 21st-century radio communication technologies is determining the direction of transmission of sources and, in more specific cases, their exact geographical location, which is based on direction-finding capabilities. Direction finding in the RF (radio frequency) range plays a critical role in several technical and security applications, including monitoring communication systems, detecting interference sources, electronic warfare, and civil and military navigation. With the spread of mobile networks, the development of drone technology, and the deployment of smart city infrastructures, there is a growing demand for fast, reliable, and accurate direction-finding solutions. While prizing radio direction finding (RDF) for navigation alone is declining due to the spread of satellite positioning systems (GPS), there is a growing demand for accurate positioning of individual communication devices in both civilian and military applications. Radio direction finding, carried out under the guidelines of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), has an impact not only on interference source identification and the detection of unauthorized transmitters, but also on scientific research areas such as radio astronomy and remote sensing. In telecommunications, spatial multiplexing (SDMA) in communication networks using modern wireless multiple-antenna (MIMO) systems also requires the precise direction of incoming radio waves to be determined. In military applications, such as signals intelligence (SIGINT) and electronic support measures (ESM), determining the line of beam (LOB) of electromagnetic radiation is essential for mapping the enemy's battle order (EOB) and establishing information superiority. [1] [1] The technical principles behind the various direction-finding methods differ depending on the type of information used: this can be the phase, amplitude, arrival time, or a combination of these factors. The technology always tailors to the specific application environment, considering factors such as accuracy, response time, system configuration size, cost, and even field applicability. This article provides a comparative overview of the most widely used direction-finding methods in the RF range, including their operating principles, advantages and disadvantages, and practical applications. The text also aims to comprehensively describe how to determine the spatial direction of a radio signal source using various engineering approaches and the criteria users should consider when selecting a method for a specific task.
