This study explores the scratch resistance and adhesion performance of polycrystalline diamond
(PCD) coatings, crucial for their application in demanding industrial environments. Applying
instrumented scratch testing, a practical, quick, cheap, and reliable test method, the adhesion
strength of PCD coatings on steel substrate is assessed. Recognizing the limitations of the
conventional scratch testing using a diamond stylus when applied for PCD coatings, a
modification, namely the use of a stainless steel ball as a scratching tool, and its applicability for
characterizing the scratch behavior of PCDs are discussed to offer a simpler and more economical
way for tr
