Abstract— Automation is gaining importance in life science
laboratories, where special robots are increasingly applied for
tasks such as liquid handling and sample transportation. Robots
play an important role in achieving the vision of the laboratory
of the future, where automated devices are integrated into a
continuous process and the need for human intervention is
minimized. This paper provides an overview on the
technological concepts that are already commonly applied for
laboratory automation, and furthermore gives an outlook on
novel technologies, such as mobile manipulators.
