Governance Gaps in Global Supply Chains: Case study of Supply Chain in Vietnam

Abstract

Along with the increasingly expanding of global supply chains in global economy is the emerging governance gaps in supply chains that generate consequences directly impacting on labour force around the globe. This has become a major concern on the link between the development of the global economy and human rights violation. This paper investigates the governance gaps that facilitate the labour exploitation and workers’ rights violation in global supply chains. Accordingly, governance gaps might facilitate multinational enterprises to have wrongful acts with their workers such as reducing labour standards and working conditions, unguaranteed job, labour right violation. Hence, the paper seeks to answer a question that how to narrow these governance gaps to eventually bridge the gaps in global supply chains. Vietnam has been chosen as a case study of supply chains to examine the labour practices caused by governance gaps and what consequences have workers in this country been faced in recent years. The paper is expected to provide Eastern enterprises and governments a better understanding of practical labour issues happening throughout the supply chain.
