A méter sztori

Abstract

A régi korok országonként, sőt tartományonként eltérő, s többnyire önmagukban is következetlen mértékrendszereitől hosszú és rögös út vezetett a tizenegyedik CGPM által 1960-ban meghozott forradalmi döntésig: az SI (Système International d'Unités) bevezetéséig. Igaz, a méter az ezt megelőző, többé-kevésbé koherens mértékrendszereknek, az MKS-nek, ill. az MKSA-nak is alapegysége volt. A következőkben az SI hét alapegysége közül a hosszúság mértékegységének a történetét foglaljuk össze; mind közül éppen ezé a legkalandosabb. Mi magyarok büszkék lehetünk arra, hogy a modern méter megszületésénél bábáskodtak magyar tudósok, és a ma elfogadott realizációja a méternekis egy híres hazánkfiától, BayZoltántólszármazik. Éppen ezért cikkünkben a méter hazai történetéről is részletesen esik szó. A cikk utolsó fejezeteként bepillantunk a kilogramm történetébe is.

From the diverse and often inconsistent measurement systems used across countries and even provinces in earlier times, it was a long and bumpy road to the revolutionary decision made by the 11th CGPM in 1960 to introduce the SI (Système International d'Unités). Notably, the metre already served as the base unit in several of the earlier, more or less coherent systems. In the following a summary of the history of the unit of length can be read, which is the most adventurous out of the seven basic units of the SI. We Hungarians can be proud of the fact that Hungarian scientists helped to create the modern realization of metre, and that the definition of the metre adopted today comes from a famous Hungarian scientist, Zoltán Bay. That is why our article also devotes special attention to the Hungarian contribution to the history of the metre. In the last chapter of the article we also take a closer look at the history of the kilogram.
